In a first of its kind, NPO has received some money from the Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA) and the Minnesota Chapter of the American Association of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), to be used in helping fund the study of a sample of Minnesota Family Law Cases that were resolved in calendar year 2025.

The files being studied include Dissolution with Child (Divorce files), Child Custody (non-married files of separating parents), and Paternity files. Many fields of data will be gathered including, who filed the case, did the party have an attorney, how was legal and physical custody assigned, the amount of parenting time provided for each parent, how the case was finalized (by Agreement of the Parties, by Default, decided by a Judge, etc., were there any domestic violence related court orders involved, and the ages and sex of the child(ren).

Resulting data will be analyzed and written up in a Study Report which will be used to identify further public policy improvements that can be made by Minnesota lawmakers.

Cost for completing this project is $25,000 with a goal to complete it before the new January session of the Minnesota Legislature. We need to raise the remaining money as soon as possible in order to finish it by the target date.

NPO has promised to match up to half, $12,500, of the cost of the study so our goal is to now raise the remaining $10,500.
